Which Type of Carpet Is Right for Your Project?
A Practical Guide to Printed Nylon, Wilton, Axminster, and Hand-Tufted Carpets & Rugs
Specifying carpet for a commercial or hospitality project means navigating a minefield of trade-offs: budget, lead times, design intent, and durability. Four construction types dominate the conversation — Printed Nylon, Wilton,
Axminster, and Hand-Tufted. Each sits at a very different point on the cost-quality curve, and choosing the wrong one can be an expensive lesson.
Printed Nylon
The entry-level option, starting from Rp. 300,000/m². Because the pattern is digitally printed onto a pre-tufted base, there is no practical limit on colour count — gradients, photographic imagery, and complex repeats are all achievable. Pile weights run 1,000–1,500g/m², so longevity under heavy traffic is limited. MOQ starts at just 200m², making it ideal for smaller projects or staged rollouts.
Best suited for: cinemas, budget hotels, office corridors, and retail fit-outs where a five-to-seven year replacement cycle is expected.
Wilton
A woven construction where yarn is continuously woven through the backing, producing a dense, durable face. Pile weights of 1,500–1,800g/m² give it noticeably better longevity than printed nylon. Pricing starts from Rp. 350,000/m², though the design palette is limited to 5–8 colours per pass — making it best suited to geometric, stripe, and corridor patterns rather than complex imagery. MOQ starts at 1,000m².
Best suited for: four-star hotels, aged care facilities, and corporate lobbies where durability and a classic aesthetic are the priority.
Axminster
The global standard for upscale commercial interiors. The 80:20 NZ wool/nylon blend delivers natural resilience and lustre, with the nylon adding abrasion resistance. Pile weights run 1,000–2,000g/m², and loom capability extends to 12–16 colours per design — enabling florals, medallions, and fully bespoke brand-driven patterns. Pricing starts from Rp. 400,000/m², MOQ is 1,000m² per design, and lead times run 90–120 days from artwork sign-off.
Best suited for: five-star hotels, casinos, cruise ships, and conference centres where the carpet is both a design statement and expected to last a decade or more.
Hand-Tufted
In a category of its own. Skilled artisans push yarn through a backing cloth by hand, allowing virtually unlimited design freedom — bespoke shapes, cut-and-loop textures, carving, embossing, and any colour palette imaginable. Pile weights start from 2,000g/m², and the tactile quality is unmatched. Pricing starts from Rp. 2,000,000/m², with no MOQ — making it viable for lift lobbies, feature areas, and statement rooms where budget is concentrated.
Best suited for: luxury suites, VIP lounges, presidential floors, and architectural feature areas where the carpet functions as a bespoke artwork.
Summary
The right specification is always a function of budget, traffic, design intent, and longevity. Spend where it shows — and where it survives.
